My E3 Wishlist

Every year there is an event that people wait 365 days for. It’s where game developers, corporate entities, the games media and just general nosy people descend upon to hear the latest in what’s coming next in video games. It’s where the big three, Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft come out and dazzle crowds with their presentations, clueless celebrities and enough illusions to make even David Blane shake his head. The “booth babes” are aplenty, the business cards are a-flyin’ and someone usually goes home a-cryin’. Yes, friends, it’s E3 time again!

This year the main focus will be on the recently revealed Xbox One and its little cousin Playstation 4. Nintendo will be there, sort of. While they won’t be announcing anything they will have a cool booth somewhere in the facility. Gamers everywhere will be plugged in, ready to praise and complain about the latest game offerings. Someone on Twitter will say something ridiculous, another will just say TL:DL (Too Long; Didn’t Listen), and someone else will get so enraged they’ll tweet IN ALL CAPS!!! But, really, it’s all about the games, guys and gals! Here is a list of my E3 wish list.

To quote Veruca Salt in Willie Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, “I want it now!” I want this thing. I want it to have my children. Take away all the extras and it’s a gaming machine. I understand this. It isn’t a big deal for me. While most gamers and critics along panned the Xbox Reveal for focusing too much on the extras and not enough on games, I say boo to you! Aside from Netflix and maybe the ESPN app, I rarely used the extra stuff on the Xbox 360. I think we’re also far along in the evolution of gaming that backwards compatibility isn’t even an issue, at least for me it isn’t. To those that complain about the used game market being squashed, well, that was a result of those illegal beagles out there. Think about that the next time you want to sail the seven seas, and go yo ho ho and a bottle of rum. What do I expect from Microsoft at E3? I want games. Major Nelson has already tweeted that we’ll be seeing more game reveals. I want a price point. I want a release date. I want Phil Harrison stage diving and crowd surfing.

While awaiting the pricing and release date of the Xbox One, I will be keeping a watchful eye on what happens over on the Sony side. I’ve never been a huge PlayStation gamer, and I admit to only using it a lot now because my Xbox 360 exploded some time ago. At this point in the gaming evolution we can surmise that these machines are capable of doing some pretty amazing stuff. In this day and age comparing graphics is quickly becoming a thing of the past. This was truly only relevant when you were comparing Sega Saturn’s graphics to N64‘s rectangles and polygons. Now all it boils down to are what kind of exclusives can each company gobble up. If Sony is smart, and I think they are, they would have secured the exclusive rights to the next iteration of the Metal Gear saga. While PlayStation 4 isn’t a day one purchase, it will be something I’ll be watching like a hawk. Also, a Vita price drop would be nice.

A new Mario game is already a given, as is a new Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. I want to see an expanded virtual library. I want to play Virtua Cop again. Is that so hard, Nintendo? I want Nintendo to stop trying to keep up with the Joneses and start trying to make cool games that people want to play. I want more third party games, as well. And not just ports of Xbox and PlayStation games, either. I want more brand new exclusive IPs for the Wii U. I haven’t owned a Nintendo product since I bought the red special edition Wii just so I can thumb my nose and tell people I had one. Nintendo doesn’t have that big system seller. They don’t have that game that makes me say “Wow! I want this game, but I don’t have a Wii U! I wanna get a Wii U!” The system seller with the Wii for me was the Goldeneye remake game. It was amazing that they were able to bring in old fans by pumping new life into an old licensed game. Can we get that with the Wii U? Can I have Starfox U? Please, Nintendo?

All in all I want games. I want a new Halo. I want a new Metal Gear. I want to see more Splinter Cell: Blacklist. I want Mirrors Edge 2. I want to see more about this Watchdogs game. And I want to see something else other than cinematic trailers for games that are still a year away from release (Destiny). I also do not want to see Microsoft employees flailing their arms while trying to show off the next Kinect throw-away title. Come on you guys… Show me something!
