NinjaBee, located in Orem, Utah, began developing games in 2004. With every game they make, NinjaBee’s goal is to create a unique, top-quality, fun experience for people of all ages. Their popular titles include “Outpost Kaloki X,” “Cloning Clyde,” “Band of Bugs,” “Boingz,” “Doritos Dash of Destruction” and “A Kingdom for Keflings.”

I had the honor of visiting the NinjaBee offices last week and get an inside look at their development site and to sit down with their Art Director and co-founder Brent Fox to get a little information about the company and upcoming games “Ancients of Ooga” and “A World of Keflings,” in an exclusive Married Gamers interview.

The offices of NinjaBee are modest using what appeared to be a converted lumber warehouse, or what used to be the business office of a lumberyard. The employees work close together and there are few luxuries. It’s clear that NinjaBee is using their resources to produce quality games. If their past is any indication, their upcoming games “Ooga” and “Keflings” will continue that trend.

I met up with Andrew Hill, their Public Relations and Marketing manager and he was kind enough to give me a tour of their offices. As you might remember “A Kingdom for Keflings” won the XBLA Game of the Year award and Andrew showed me the plaque that was displayed on the wall in their entryway. The foyer featured posters of many of their popular game titles, such as “Cloning Clyde” and “Outpost Kaloki,” as posters on the wall.

In Andrew’s office, which he shares with some game testers, their calendar of events was, of course, highlighted with the upcoming E3 event. The offices are busy with the big expo coming up in just a few weeks. The game testers were working on bug testing the upcoming “Keflings” game, and it looked promising from what I could observe in the short period of time I was in the office.

Next up was their audio production “studio.” Considering the exceptional quality of the sound work from NinjaBee, I was almost floored when I walked into the room and Andrew told me that the simple set-up was their entire sound department. It was a basic computer and a microphone, with a small closet that was soundproofed for voice recording. I’ve personally been impressed with the catchy tunes and excellent sound produced by NinjaBee, so seeing their small sound room was a surprise. It showed me that you can do more with less when you have some talent producing your work.

We then went through their two large development rooms which had a couple dozen people total, all intent in their work, only one or two people lifted their heads and noticed we’d come into the room and waved to us. Like I said, very busy these days. But those who did see us were friendly.

The tour ended at Brent Fox’s desk. I was impressed with the office make up as even he didn’t have a separate office away from everybody, but shared one of the large rooms with the developers with his desk separated to the corner. To me this is a sign of a strong company with excellent management and employee relations when they share common workspace.

Brent’s desk was a compilation of paper work, and I noted he had an impressive collection of games on a bookshelf behind his desk. I’m sure that during down time, there’s a lot of multiplayer gaming among the NinjaBee staff.

I then conducted the interview where I learned more about the company, how they have done with their games, and even got a little tidbit of information at the end that was previously unreleased by the studio. It was a pleasure to visit with them, and I hope they’ll have me back again one day for some hands on or for more questions about their upcoming games as they approach their respective release dates.
