Boba Fett table is one of the best available for Pinball FX 2

The Empire Strikes Back table is a Hoth-sized letdown

Star Wars pinball Boba Fett

Zen Studios has made a name for itself by creating fun pinball tables featuring popular geek franchises like Marvel Comics and Popcap’s Plants vs Zombies. The studio is hoping to catch lightning in a bottle again delivering every geek’s dream with ten Star Wars themed pinball tables for Pinball FX 2 (also known as Zen Pinball 2 on the PlayStation platforms). This week pinball enthusiasts can download the first pack of three tables featuring an Empire Strikes Back table, Boba Fett table, and Clone Wars table.

Star Wars Pinball -Empire Strikes Back table

The Empire Strikes Back table is the most anticipated pinball table. The movie is the best in the series and lots of key moments could be captured in the table design. Unfortunately of the three Star Wars pinball tables this is by leaps and bounds the biggest let down. The table is fairly simple with lots of open areas in its lower half. The top of the table seems overly-crowded and the player is not able to enjoy some of the action that takes place. Darth Vader is front and center in the table, and one wonders if that is because his character is easiest to emulate, because the other actors’ voices used in this pinball table are near laughable. The voice work manages to take the fun out of playing the table. Further making this pinball table more of a chore is the “bending” of the pinball physics in the interests of Darth Vader using the force. However, there is a rather nice use of a lightsaber to deliver the pinball and the artwork on the table is terrific.

Star Wars Pinball -Boba Fett table

The Boba Fett pinball table is easily the best of the three tables. It has lots of exciting areas on the table and features the Sarlacc Pit in the upper half. The Boba Fett table features some good character voices including Stormtroopers, Darth Vader, Jabba the Hutt and the bounty hunter himself. The table offers players several fun missions to try to achieve and the multi-ball on this table is one of the best in any Pinball FX 2 table. The character animations are truly a ton of fun to enjoy. At times, Boba Fett will use his wrist launcher to save a ball from being lost. If the player is lucky, they will see the Sarlac Pitt “interact” with the famous bounty hunter. This is truly the gem of this first Star Wars pack!

Star Wars Pinball -Clone Wars table

The last table included is Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Much like the Boba Fett table, this one is also a lot of fun. Some of the animations are interactive, including shooting pinballs into a rescue transport. The voice acting is passable but Yoda’s sayings are a little on the tiresome and repetitive side. The table features some very fun areas to kick the pinball into and rack up some very cool bonuses. While the Clone Wars table isn’t jam-packed with cool animations or sections like the Boba Fett table, the ball movement and the easy multi-ball opportunities make this a lite romp and encourages high-score chases against friends and leaderboards.

Zen Studios is continuing to add to the wealth of great pinball gaming on the Xbox 360. The Boba Fett table is truly the highlight of not only this first pack but of all the tables available on Pinball FX 2. The Clone Wars table is also a table that encourages multiple replays. Despite a small misstep with The Empire Strikes Back, Zen Studios shows that they are able to share the fun of not only digital pinball in great tables, but also in representing such a classic and revered franchise like Star Wars.

You lost me at “The movie [Empire] is the best in the series.” I can’t wait to play that Boba Fett table!
